Director’s Statement
When Peering In is a time-bending reflection of the past decade of my life in theatre. I started theatre when I was in 6th grade and came out as queer and transgender soon after. Throughout my years of education, I've dabbled in a wide variety of different types of art, but at its root I was stuck in the performances of my past. Over time, I started to realize that I may have left performance for reasons other than my stage fright. Blending performative, observational, and poetic modes, this documentary is a reflection of my experiences with art and transness. By revisiting the old places I used to perform and recreating some of the most fundamental performance pieces from my life I hope to bring an awareness not only to myself but to others about the challenges of growing up transgender, as well as the joy that can be found in a community of trans artists. I hope my audience will feel with me as I face the challenges of revisiting my past and the wonder of building new memories in the here and now.
